Rusting of 303 stainless vs. 416 stainless - Finishing

Rusting of 303 stainless vs. 416 stainless 2007. I work for a small medical device company and we have been seeing rapid rusting in 416 ss. parts which have a thin layer of Tungsten Carbide applied to them. 303 ss vs 416 ss - practicalmachinist

Dec 29, 2008 · I have a choice of using 303 ss or 416 ss for some 2" diameter threaded plugs. I use 303 usually. The 416 is cheaper. I did some test cuts and it seams to machine about the same as 303. The corroision resistance of 416 is supposed to be slightly less than 303, but the plugs will only see incidental water contact, so I do not think that is an issue.

Stainless Steel 303 or 416??? The Hobby-Machinist

Oct 27, 2014 · 416 is really nice to machine (well, for stainless!). I use it often when shaping knife bolsters and guards. If you have an oven, you can also harden it which helps minimize scratches. It is MUCH easier to work than 303. I use 316 occasionally for salt water stuff but would probably be overkill for what you are doing. I would go with the 416.
